Coca-Cola in Sweden launches refillable concept at PBX in collaboration with GLACIAL

Coca-Cola in Sweden is launching its first refillable on-the-go concept.

PRESS RELEASE

Today, Coca-Cola in Sweden is launching its first refillable on-the-go concept. The launch is carried out in collaboration with GLACIAL at PBX - Reitan's new venture with the ambition to become the world's most sustainable convenience store. The concept from Coca-Cola offers consumers to fill purchased, or carry-on beverage containers and choose from more than 60 flavors, the majority of which are not available to buy packaged.

In 2020, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) launched a group-wide climate strategy with the ambition to reach net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2040. In order to reach the group's goal of net zero emissions, the packaging plays a decisive role. Coca-Cola in Sweden was the first market in the world to switch to a PET portfolio produced from 100 percent recycled plastic* and the factory in Jordbro was one of the first two within the CCEP group to be certified as climate neutral according to the PAS 2060 standard, previously in year.

- Our packaging accounts for a majority of our emissions. We therefore need to find innovative solutions so that consumers can continue to enjoy our drinks with the same good quality and taste, while reducing the amount of packaging. We see great opportunities with refillable solutions and are very happy to be able to test our new concept together with GLACIAL at PBX, says Lisa Wahlström, sustainability director at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners in Sweden.

With the concept, Coca-Cola in Sweden wants to strengthen the consumption behavior of refilling beverage containers again and again in order to reduce the packaging's footprint and potential littering.

- Our goal with PBX is to develop the world's most sustainable convenience store, and to be able to do that we need to join hands with our partners. PBX must function as a "living lab" to test and evaluate sustainable operation and a sustainable supply. The collaboration with Coca-Cola in Sweden has been very rewarding and includes everything from assortment and origin to the new concept, says Jesper Pettersson, purchasing manager at Reitan Convenience Sweden AB.

Consumers at PBX will be able to purchase refillable beverage containers from GLACIAL that pair perfectly with Coca-Cola products as they keep cold for up to 12 hours. In total, over 60 flavors are offered from the Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, FuzeTea and Smartwater brands, a majority of which are low-calorie options. Of course, consumers are also offered to fill up their own drink container.

- What we are launching now could be compared to the beverage industry's response to recycling. We are happy to cooperate with GLACIAL, which has a strong position in the Swedish market when it comes to reusable beverage containers. In addition, we have a common partner in the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Coca-Cola is the largest partner in the world when it comes to WWF's work to protect the world's freshwater resources, and GLACIAL has a combined partnership and license agreement with WWF where they donate money for the benefit of the world's oceans, concludes Lisa Wahlström.

From October 14, 2021, consumers can visit the PBX at Albanovägen 8 in Stockholm and test the new refillable concept.
